HubSpot Academy’s Free Marketing Certifications
Which free HubSpot Academy certifications cover digital marketing, how long each takes, how the exam works and how long the credential stays valid.

HubSpot Academy offers marketing certifications at no cost. You watch videos, pass short quizzes and take an exam. Here is what HubSpot itself says about each one, and what the credential can and can’t do for you.
What it costs
Nothing. HubSpot’s certification overview calls them “Completely free & online.” Its course pages say a HubSpot Academy account is “100% free.”
The overview lists three steps:
- “Watch videos and take simple quizzes to complete all lessons.”
- “Pass the certification exam and complete practical exercises.”
- “Post on LinkedIn and show your Network.”
The marketing certifications
These are the marketing certifications on HubSpot’s overview page. The length is the figure HubSpot shows there. The validity comes from HubSpot’s help article How long does my certification badge last?, last updated May 30, 2025.
| Certification | Length HubSpot lists | Valid for |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound | 3 hours | Two years |
| Digital Marketing | 3 hours | Two years |
| Content Marketing | 8 hours | Two years |
| Social Media Marketing | 5 hours | Two years |
| Social Media Marketing Certification II | 3 hours | Two years |
| Digital Advertising | 4 hours | Two years |
| Inbound Marketing Optimization | 5 hours | One year |
The course pages give more detail for two of them:
- Inbound: 2 hr 45 min, with 7 lessons, 15 videos and 4 quizzes, per the course page. HubSpot says: “The only requirement for getting certified is to take the exam at the end.”
- Digital Marketing: 3 hr 24 min, with 10 lessons, 30 videos and 8 quizzes, per the course page. HubSpot says it covers “diverse digital marketing topics like SEO, social media, email, and more!”
Plan extra time for the exam and for any practical exercises.
What about SEO and email?
- HubSpot’s SEO course link, academy.hubspot.com/courses/seo-training, now opens a course called AEO Fundamentals. AEO stands for “Answer engine optimization.” HubSpot lists it as a “FREE Certification Course” of 2 hr 20 min, with 7 lessons and 19 videos. The validity article doesn’t list it.
- The validity article also lists Email Marketing, valid for two years. We couldn’t confirm its current length on the course page, so it isn’t in the table.
How the exam works
HubSpot’s help pages set these rules:
- Time limit: it depends on the exam. “The right panel will detail how long the time limit is for that exam,” says HubSpot’s certification FAQ (updated August 6, 2026). Look under Exam in the course sidebar.
- One sitting: “You are required to finish the exam in one sitting,” according to HubSpot’s article on exam length. If you close or leave the page, you’re locked out for 12 hours.
- Scoring: “Scores are determined automatically by HubSpot’s grading software.” Your score is your correct answers divided by the number of questions.
- Retakes: “You can take a certification exam again 12 hours after the previous attempt.”
- Practical exercises: some certifications require them. “To pass the HubSpot certification, each person must submit their own completed exercises and test for grading.” Some exercises are graded by hand, which can take 5 to 7 business days.
HubSpot’s help pages don’t publish a passing score or the number of questions for these exams.
What these certifications are good for
- Trying a field for free. You can test your interest in content, social media or paid ads before you pay for a longer program.
- A line on your résumé and LinkedIn. HubSpot’s own process ends with sharing the badge on LinkedIn.
- A shared vocabulary. The Digital Marketing course teaches what HubSpot calls a “human-centered, inbound-first digital marketing strategy.” If a job uses HubSpot’s tools or methods, that vocabulary helps.
Their limits
- HubSpot issues them, not a school. They are a software company’s credential. They are not a college degree or a state license. To see how this differs from other credentials, read Certificate vs. certification.
- They expire. Most last two years. Inbound Marketing Optimization lasts one. HubSpot also warns that “HubSpot certification requirements and lengths evolve with the digital marketing world.”
- They show knowledge, not results. An exam score doesn’t show that you ran a campaign that worked. Pair the badge with a small project you can show an employer.
